"Marina Sunrise" 11x15" watercolor, drawing dominance

Sometimes in art and particularly in watercolor, the paint itself takes the dominant role, other times, the drawing takes it. The latter is the case with "Marina Sunrise." I truly love the drawing aspect of painting in watercolor. Sometimes, all you want is a very light, simplfied drawing, because you plan to use paint with more expression and let brushstrokes take the lead in telling your story. However, if the drawing is detailed, as it was with this painting, when it comes to laying down the paint, less is often more. You don't need a lot of paint because the structure is already strong. With "Marina Sunrise" I used a very limited palette of yellows and blues, with only a tiny bit of brighter color for pop. For finishing the painting, I enjoy adding those very last bits of darkest darks that reinforce the range of values and pull the eye into the focal area of the painting.
