About the Artist

Art critic Brian Sherwin (Editor of The Art Edge) commented on artist Judy Mudd's cityscape paintings,  "Judy Mudd's cityscape paintings offer a slice of American life. Her cityscape paintings spotlight the beauty of pedestrian movement -- the energy of daily interactions that we often take for granted. These works beckon viewers to pause and reflect... they serve as visual reminders that life is indeed good."

Judy Mudd, a resident of Louisville, KY, has been passionate about art since she was four years old, when she sketched at the kitchen table alongside her mother, Juanita Watkins Moore, an oil and acrylic painter. Self-taught, Judy develops her paintings through extensive research. She goes on photo shoots in various atmospheric conditions, sketches outdoors, takes notes, and creates color and value studies. Back in the studio, she lets the paintbrush guide her creativity. In addition to being a full-time artist, Judy conducts painting workshops and classes.

Artist Statement:

"Art originates from the heart and should not be painted as a mere replica of a subject. It is important to express feelings through the chosen medium's attributes, whether it is brushmarks, watery effects, etc.  The artist's personal vision serves as the foundation for the essence of the painting that is eventually shared with others.”

Regarding the Medium:

Watercolor's unpredictable and flowing nature invites curiosity, making the audience feel intrigued about how each piece unfolds uniquely. I love how it moves, flows, and interacts during the creative process, producing effects unattainable with other media. By preparing with sketches and studies, I allow for spontaneity when I begin painting.  By letting the watercolor process guide me I never quite know how the journey will unfold. My ultimate goal is to create engaging paintings that have atmosphere and emotional impact, resonating with others.
