As a project for my Tuesday classes, I asked students to interpret Monet's oil painting "Woman with a Parasol" and attempt to translate his brush marks into watercolor. While Monet completed this larger painting mostly on site, in the wind, in a single day, we took three classes to interpret color, mix paints, use various brushes, and practice mark-making. The more we painted, the more we understood the various gestures he used to express the wind, sunlight, and feelings of the moment. Breaking it down made us appreciate his talent and the beauty of the painting even more!
