This painting was inspired by a photo taken by K. Johnston, a student of mine. The subject (McPolin Barn) was lovely to begin with and made it both interesting and challenging to paint. I wanted to capture the stillness of winter, so modified the scene, removing much of the background and whittling the focus down to the barn and surrounding land. The entire scene is accented by the soft atmosphere and movement of the chilled air in the background. While primarily a painting created using a very limited color palette, tints of both warm and cool neutrals make this an exciting painting. My intent was, by adding warmth within the cool shadows the viewer feels not only the chill of a winter scene but the warmth of the sunlight bouncing off of the snow.
